PECaD is excited to announce two events for our 2017 “Smart Health: Cancer Community Education Day.”
Our East St. Louis, Illinois, Smart Health Day is scheduled for Saturday, June 17. The event will take place at Southern Mission Missionary Baptist Church located at 2801 State St., East St Louis, IL 62205. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and programming will take place from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.
The St. Louis City event was held on Saturday, April 22, 2016 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis campus. The event was held on the second floor of the Taylor Avenue Building, located at 600 S. Taylor Ave., St. Louis, MO, 63110.
Smart Health was created by The Program for the Elimination of Cancer Disparities (PECaD) to provide our community partners with deeper learning opportunities pertaining to cancer prevention and research, to use as a platform to report back on research results, and to educate individuals and families about research and its relevance. These events are designed to deliver intensive small group and one-on-one health education (consistent with Community Guide recommendations for increasing cancer screening) through small interactive workshops over the course of four hours. The workshop topics are jointly determined between community partners and PECaD’s community health educator.
Participants can expect workshops that will include the 8 Ways to Prevent Cancer and Stay Healthy information on cancer survivorship, a healthy cooking demonstration, how to exercise on a budget, and cancer screening recommendations and guidelines. Our “Intro to Research” session provides an overview of research designs, questions to ask, and one-on-one discussions with a researcher. During the event, participants also have the opportunity to browse our research poster gallery, which displays research findings on specific cancer sites.
This event is free to the community, and lunch will be provided. Return Metro passes will be available to those in need of transportation. Spaces are limited. To reserve your spot, contact PECaD by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org or calling (314) 286-0095.
